Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Thursday run......

As training winds down for me and for all the runners running on Sunday in New York, today called for a 4 miler. Overcast, mid 50;s, wind out of the NE at about 10mph.. The plan was to run easy for the majority of the run with about mile at marathon effort- the conditions led to faster paces than I planned but the effort was very easy. 2 miles at 7 min pace followed by 2 miles at 6.15 pace.... Time now to stretch and relax. The run felt great and I am looking forward to Sunday. Today's run prett… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Wednesday run

It was moody blustery mild and damp on the Spring Lake/Belmar boardwalk this afternoon that was very enjoyable. 2.5 miles out and back into a headwind the first half and an average pace of 8.30 per mile- nice n easy- about an easier pace as I will run and it was very enjoyable as I watched an angry ocean aside me. I was happy to run into my friend Tim Mahoney who is also running NYC on Sunday and we had a chance to exchange thoughts and ideas and reflections on the race as we ran and all in all… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Tuesday track

After a nice relaxing day off Monday from running ( still had to work :) - it was back to track on Tuesday... 1 mile warm up 1 mile strides overcast, rain held off, 15-18mph wind from NNE 4 X 1 mile with 400 jog: 6.21.66 Nice and relaxed 5.54.07 - still relaxed, trying to run 1 minute faster than avg. goal marathon pace, felt good - then a harder 3rd mile in 5.24.59 (2.43-2.41 neg.split) then a relaxed 6.37.55 back at marathon type effort that I plan in running in the 2nd half of the marathon. I… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Sunday run !~

Team Boomer teammates, I hope you all had good final longish runs prior to the marathon next week. For me, I ran 10 miles today, the first 6 on the Brielle 10k course that I have written so much about. The next four miles was a 2 x 2 mile loop through the adjacent towns of Brielle and Manasquan. Temps in the low 50's were perfect, sunny but definitely gusty and breezy. Predominantly from the NNW, it seemed to hit me from all different angles throughout the run. Today, clad in my Team Boomer unif… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Saturday track October 24th

Temps in the 60's strong wind out of the south at 18mph and quite humid, in the 85% range. Overcast but it was not raining and overall quite pleasant. On the menu was a pre marathon prep. Type workout. Overall 10 miles with warm up and cooldown and including recoveries. 400 recovery between all intervals to get the distance in I wanted on the day. Mile at 7 min pace, the pace I plan to run the first half of the marathon at. Actual 6.57 (felt very comfortable, actually had to ease back a little s… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Friday blowing in the wind !~

My morning shift at UPS is so pressurized and intense that I ran this afternoon on the boardwalk in Spring Lake and Belmar with a stiff ENE wind blowing in fairly mild temps, mid 50's. and I ran easy, within myself and felt cleansed and refreshed from the intense morning that I had that commenced at 4am.....This was a run on a blustery grey Friday afternoon on the boardwalk with no prerequisite for pace and I just lollygagged my way through an 8 min pace run (actually a little slower than 8 min… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Thursday Threshold & Tempo

A mixed run today of 5 miles in gorgeous 75 degree sunny weather with a breeze. 2 miles to start, I was tired in the beginning; I had just woken from a nap after a very early 3am start today and some very physical work all before 9am.... however when it came time to run some tempo and threshold on the latter part of the 10k course, to my surprise, the horses were there, a switch from 8 min warm up pace to a 6.11 and feeling good on the hardest mile on the course, then up to a 5.56 on the easiest… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Wednesday

Ran at 2pm, gorgeous weather, mid to high 60's ran in my new TEAM BOOMER uniform which is awesome and although I was up early and working very hard at UPS I still had an awesome 6.5 miler through the local neighborhoods and down to the beach and back finishing up at my sons' school in time to meet my wife and pick up the boys. Sweet run !~ Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Tuesday 10/20

I took Monday off, save for a little light strength training of pushups and sit ups, and it was back to track Tuesday... There was one outstanding goal not yet completed before the New York marathon. When I say outstanding, I mean in the sense of not completed, not in the sense of brilliant. All else that I wanted to achieve I have been fortunate to complete. The amount of longs I wanted. The tempos I wanted including a sub 38 10k on a very challenging local 10k course. I made the goal of 10 wee… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Easy like a Sunday morning ~

Ran a little later today, I have a new schedule starting this week which will require me to rise Monday to Friday @ 3.30am so I took advantage of a little sleep in today and then cooked a Royal feast of a breakfast for me and my sons- then I finally got around to running at 11.00am, a steady state 12 miler..... two loops of the challenging Brielle course. I was in bed early last night but awake 'til after midnight watching the baseball and despite the sleep in could feel it in my turnover this m… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Saturday track

Well to say today was windy is like saying a 15 foot wave is small surf ! It was mighty windy out of the Northeast steady 18-25mph wind with stronger gusts. I knew that the paces today for my final week (week 10/10) of 5 x 1 mile with 400 meter jog all under 3.30 would be slower than in the past couple of weeks but I was not concerned. I knew that as long as I put forth the effort, that is what would matter. The pace is there when the conditions are right. In recent weeks I have been averaging w… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Wednesday ~Thursday

Great to chat on the phone yesterday with David Schneidman who is running the NYM for Team Boomer, his first marathon. David had a couple of questions for me about the race and I was happy to try and help. As for my running, I blogged after my easy shake out run on Tuesday which removed some of the toxins built up after Sunday's 18 mile race. Yesterday I ran the same easy loop earlier in the morning that I ran Tuesday evening. It was a relaxing 3.5 miles, feeling better than I did the night bef… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Monday Tuesday

Monday ( the day after the 18 miler) I rested from running but pursued my regular regimen of pushups, sit ups and back extensions. Tuesday I strength trained at home with Kettle bells, pushups, sit ups and back extensions. Then I went for an easy 3.5 mile run with my friend and athlete Jim and then I went to my Tuesday evening yoga class. My legs were slightly fatigued at the end of the run after the 18 miler Sunday but overall I felt good which I am happy about. Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Friday & Saturday

Friday a nice run late afternoon on the Spring Lake-Belmar boards with a strong south wind which was in my face on the way back. Easy 6 miles around 7.35 pace..... sunny and 73 degrees.... Saturday am, now that I have my Lactate threshold developed to where I need it for the marathon, I ran some V02 work. 1 mile warm up at track in temps in the low 60's and strong WSW wind - 6.15am arrival at track, commenced interval of a mile at 7.00am, smooth 5.45 mile, then full recovery then a 2 mile in 5.5… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Thursday 1008

Track at 4pm sunny 70 degrees and seemed quite warm with the bright sunlight and comparative to the 50's and low 60's I have been running in. The wind was the worst part with a stiff WNW wind at 15-18mph. The workout at track called for a mile warm up, mile strides, then a 5,000 meter TT. I had a specific goal in mind but really struggled with the conditions after 2 miles. I was even fortunate enough to have one of my high schoolers, Nick, pace me through the first mile. My 5th lap (the 1st solo… Continue

Gerard "GP" Pearlberg Teacher and pupil...

Nice 8 miler today. Ran in the Brielle hills as the neighborhood streets offered the most shelter from the wind. I had to postpone my planned 5,000 meter time trial today due to my wife going to work earlier than usual and I would not have had enough time to complete the track run and get back to get my boys off to school. Yes, in the summer I could have gone earlier and had daylight but a TT is hard enough without having to run it in the dark ! So anyway, I changed plans to an easy run and ran… Continue
